Third Space Improv to celebrate anniversary with free show

It’s all about community and fun at Third Space Improv, which opened last year on Malaga Street in downtown St. Augustine.

Third Space Improv was founded by Amy Angelilli, a certified laughter yoga leader and author of “100 Things to Do in St. Augustine Before You Die.” She created Third Space as a place outside the home and apart from work — a third space, where people can come together to live in the moment, build self-confidence and make new friends. It’s a space to bond over a shared interest, for all community members, whether improv is something you say “yes” to or not.

“The past year has been equal parts challenging and equal parts rewarding,” Angelilli said. “You realize all the things you don’t know once you have a brick-and-mortar operation. Seeing the community grow, connect and create makes it all worth it. That's what a third space is all about."

This month, Third Space will celebrate a year of laughter, creativity and community — and everyone’s invited.

The first anniversary celebration will kick off Saturday, Jan. 11, with a free champagne happy hour from 7 to 8 p.m. and a free show at 8 p.m. There will also be beer, wine, soft drinks, fresh popcorn, and other snacks for purchase. Parking is free.

Whether you’re already a part of the Third Space community or just discovering the magic of this place for the first time, the anniversary celebration is a mix of everything they’ve built together over the last year.

“Amy has brought improv to St. Augustine, and we’re a better community because of it,” said Amanda Johnson, improv member who has completed all six levels of improv training. “Improv can feel like magic, and it’s because Amy has created a community, a space to learn active listening and how to be supportive of your teammates. It’s a beautiful thing.”

Third Space offers weekly improv shows on Saturday evenings with an all-star house troupe as well as monthly community improv shows featuring performers from other Florida cities, stand up shows, open mic nights and drag shows. In addition to their 6-level improv training (see 3rdspaceimprov.com/classes), they offer a stand-up comedy class, comedy writing, laughter yoga and yin yoga, campfire conversations (where attendees learn how to avoid small talk), improv workshops from visiting improv instructors and monthly improv mixers.

The space is open to the community, for groups to rent or to use as a part of their special event, like a private show for parties, training and/or team building off sites. They have also hosted music listening events, play rehearsals, voice lessons, art classes, networking events and kids improv workshops — and in the summer, improv camps are available for kids too.
